Jowar Khichdi | Jonna Khichdi | Cracked Jowar Khichdi | Sorghum Millet Khichdi

Jowar Khichdi – Hearty and Healthy whole grain mixed with vegetables. Jonnalu, Jola, cholam are other South Indian names for sorghum millet aka Jowar. This recipe is suitable for people who are trying to loose weight too. This khichdi is good for people ages 6 months to old age and also good for people who are sick to get energy. Good for people of any age, good for diabetics, gluten-free, full of nutrients, fiber, controls blood sugar levels, high in protein. Jowar/Jonna can be incorporated in our diets in many forms like jowar roti, jowar idli, jowar dosa, jowar bisibelabath, jowar pongal, jowar laddu, jowar upma, and jowar khichdi. This can be served as a breakfast, lunch or dinner. But if having for dinner, skip the raita part.

Cracked Jowar vegetable khichdi can be cooked in the regular pressure cooker and also in an Instant Pot and you can also cook on stove top.

Jowar Khichdi

I used whole moong dal with skin instead of split yellow moong beans/dal to enrich the khichdi even more. You may use any vegetables on hand.

How to make Craked Jowar Khichdi

PREP TIME: 5 MINS  COOK TIME: 15-20 MINS  TOTAL TIME: 25MINS  SOAK TIME : 8 HRS COURSE: MAIN COURSE  CUISINE: SOUTH INDIAN SERVINGS : 4

Ingredients

ghee – 3 tbsp, dividedbeans – 1/4 cup
jeera – 1 tsppeas – 1/4 cup
cloves – 4, cardamom – 1carrots – 1/2 cup
cinnamon – 1″ginger – 1 tsp
bay leaf – 1salt – 1 tsp, turmeric – 1/4 tsp, lemon juice – 1 to 2 tbsp
onion, finely chopped – 1/4 cupwhole moong – 1/4 cup, 4 hrs soaked
corn – 2 tbspjowar rava – 1 cup, 8 hrs soaked
peanuts – 2 tbspgreen chillies – 4, finely chopped
curry leaves, cilantrowater – 3 cups

Instructions

  1. Rinse and soak jowar rava or cracked jowar rava for 8 hrs. Rinse and soak whole moong for 4 hrs.
  2. Heat a pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp ghee, 1 tsp jeera, 4 cloves, 1 cardamom, 1 bay leaf, 1 cinnamon stick. Sauté 30 sec.
  3. Add 4 green chillies, 2 tbsp peanuts, 1/4 cup onions, curry leaves. Sauté 30 sec.
  4. Add 1 tsp ginger paste and sauté 30 sec.
  5. Add 1/4 cup each peas, beans, 1/2 cup carrots, 2 tbsp corn. Mix well.
  6. Add 1/4 cup soaked and drained whole moong, and 1/4 tsp turmeric.
  7. Add 3 cups water and 1 tsp salt. Let the water comes to boil.
  8. Add drained jowar rava. Mix well. Close the lid. Cook for about 20 mins or 2 whistles. Let it naturally release the pressure and then open the lid.
  9. Garnish with 1-2 tbsp ghee, 2 tbsp lemon juice and cilantro. You can also add 1/2 cup broccoli and mix everything well.
  10. Serve with papad and cucumber raita or mango pickle.

Cucumber Raita

  1. In a bowl, add 1 cup beaten yogurt, 1/2 tsp jeera powder, 1/2 tsp pepper powder, salt, 1-2 tsp lemon juice, 1/8 tsp chat masala, cilantro, 1 cup grated cucumber. Mix everything well.
  2. Serve as a side to Jowar Khichdi, Jowar Roti, Jowar Upma, Sorakaya thappilent/Masala Jowar roti.

Tips

  1. Don’t forget to soak jonna rawa/cracked jowar atleast 6-8 hrs, and moong for 4 hrs.
  2. Can be served with any raita.
  3. Regular yellow moong dal can also be added instead of whole moong.
  4. Ghee can be replaced by oil or coconut oil.
  5. Can be cooked in Instant Pot or on stove top.
