Refried Beans recipe – 1
This recipe is also useful in many Mexican dishes. I used it mainly in Mexican Pizza. This recipe doesn’t call for any veggies except beans.
- Rinse and soak 3/4 cup pinto beans overnight. Use an instant pot to make beans. Turn on the instant pot to saute mode. Pour 1 tbsp oil in the steel pot, add 3/4 tsp azwain and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds. Once they start sputtering, add 1/2 tsp grated ginger and 2 chopped green chillies. Fry for 30 sec.
2. Add soaked Pinto beans, 1 tsp taco seasoning, 1/2 tsp salt and 1.5 cups water. Close the lid. Change the IP setting to pressure cook for 22 mins.
3. Mash the cooked beans with potato masher, check the taste, adjust salt to taste. Use it on Mexian pizza, toastada…or on any Mexican dishes.
Refried Beans- 2
Refried Beans is the most common Mexican side dish and important staple food in Mexican Cuisine. This is one pot recipe and easy to make. Refried beans is also a primary ingredient in many.. Tostada, Chimichanga, Mexican Pizza and Enchilada recipes. Refried beans is usually made with pinto beans. I used half measure of pinto and half measure of red kidney beans in this recipe.
I am sharing 2 types of one pot beans here. 1st recipe with kidney and pinto beans, and the 2nd with only pinto beans.
How to make One Pot Refried Beans

In this 1st one pot refried beans recipe, I am adding onions, lettuce, green capsicum and spinach. Since there are many veggies in refried beans itself, there is no need to add veggies again in any Mexican recipes like toastada.
Ingredients
- pinto beans – 1 cup
- red kidney beans/rajma – 1 cup
- onion – finely chopped – 1/2 cup
- green chillies – chopped – 3 or 4
- oil – 2 tbsp
- azwain seeds – 2 tsp
- jeera/cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- ginger – grated – 1 tsp
- taco seasoning – 2 tsp
- salt
- water – 1.5 cups
- lettuce – chopped – 1/4 cup
- green bell pepper – chopped – 1/4 cup
- spinach – chopped – 1/4 cup
Instructions
- Rinse and soak beans overnight.
- Take an instant pot to make beans. Turn on the instant pot to saute mode.
- Pour 2 tbsp oil in the steel pot, add 2 tsp azwain and 1 tsp cumin seeds.
- Once they start sputtering, add 1 tsp grated ginger. Fry for 30 sec.
- Add onions and green chillies. Fry them for 1 minute.
- Add 2 tsp taco seasoning, beans, fresh water and salt.
- Close the lid. Change the instant pot setting to pressure cook on high. Set the cook time to 20 mins.
- After the instant pot turns off, keep it closed for 10-15 mins more.
- Now mash the beans and add chopped lettuce, spinach and bell pepper.
- Mix well and check the taste for salt and seasoning.
- Use Refried beans in all of your favorite Mexican dishes.

5. Add 2 tsp taco seasoning, salt, 1.5 cups water and beans. Close the lid. Change the instant pot setting to pressure cook on high. Set the cook time to 20 mins.
6. After the instant pot turns off, keep it closed for 10-15 mins more.
7. Now mash the beans and add chopped lettuce, spinach and bell pepper.
8. Mix well and check the taste for salt and seasoning.
9. Use Refried beans in all of your favorite Mexican dishes.
Tips
- Beans can be cooked in the regular pressure cooker and follow the rest of the process.
- Instant pot can be replaced with regular pressure cooker.
