Upma Patties/Tikki with Leftover Upma

Upma Patties – This recipe is converting the breakfast dish into a healthy snack (without deep frying) by adding a few spices – a new avatar! Very easy to make and fastest way to prepare an evening snack with your morning breakfast’s leftovers. Upma is a traditional Indian breakfast dish, though it is and can be eaten as a dinner or lunch or at all times of the day. The style of preparation varies slightly from place to place but the base of this dish is cooked coarse semolina or brown wheat rava which is mildly spiced and tempered with onions, mustard seeds, curry leaves, vegetables, tomato and chillies. You can pair this dish with chutneys, sambhar, spiced roasted chickpea powder, pickle etc…

Patties and tikkis are shallow fried and more easy way to prepare, your kids will love it eating these patties with a ketchup or hot & sweet sauce or hot sauce. You may also use them in burgers or sandwiches😅😋.

How to make Upma Patties with Leftover Upma

PREP TIME: 5 MINS  COOK TIME: 15 MINS  TOTAL TIME: 20 MINS  COURSE: SNACKS/APPETIZERS  CUISINE: INDIAN SERVINGS : YIELDS 10

Ingredients

  • leftover wheat rava upma or fresh upma – 2 cups
  • onion – 1/2 cup, finely chopped
  • jeera – 1 tsp
  • green chillies – 2 (adjust)
  • red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp (adjust)
  • roasted sesame seeds – 2 tsp
  • salt – 1/4 tsp/to taste
  • rice flour – 1 tsp
  • curry leaves – finely chopped
  • cilantro – finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Take upma in a blender and grind a little to form paste like consistency.
  2. Transfer it to a bowl, add all the ingredients and mix well to form a dough.
  3. Take a small portion of upma dough, roll it like a ball and flatten it.
  4. Heat a tawa, sprinkle 1-2 tbsp of oil over it.
  5. Place flattened patties on the heated pan.
  6. Shallow fry on med low heat both sides until golden in color and crisp.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite chutney or ketchup or hot sauce.

Tips

  1. If you want more crispier versions, dip the flattened dough in a corn flour slurry, then dip in bread crumbs and then deep fry in oil.
  2. If the upma is runny after grinding, add a little more rice flour or all purpose flour/maida.
