Banana Chips – with step by step photo recipe. Banana chips are one of the authentic and popular snacks from Kerala region. This interesting deep-fried snack recipe made with green raw/unripened banana. it is a popular snack across India. This is usually good for munching anytime and as evening snack with tea. These chips are very easy to make and requires very few ingredients.

I have used raw and tender green banana for this recipe and I used coconut oil for frying to make this recipe authentic. Adding turmeric to water and rinsing banana slices, will help get bright yellow color to chips.

How to make Raw Banana Chips

Ingredients

  • raw banana/plantain/aratikaya – 1 big
  • oil – for deep fry
  • turmeric – 1/2 tsp
  • salt – 1/2 tsp (optional)

Instructions

  1. peel off the skin completely.
  2. Slice the peeled banana to medium thickness.
  3. Transfer them to a large bowl of water, add salt and turmeric.
  4. Drain off the water completely and dry them with clean kitchen towels or napkins.
  5. Now deep fry in hot coconut oil. Don’t overcrowd.
  6. Stir occasionally, and fry on medium flame. Fry till you see the sizzling & bubbles in the oil becoming less and less and almost disappear.
  7. The slices would have changed color and become crisp. Remove the fried banana chips and then drain off on paper towels. Note: If you would like to add red chilli powder and salt or pepper on fried chips to make them spicier, do it right away in this step. If the chips cool down, spices will not mix well with the chips.
  8. Enjoy fresh banana chips and store in air tight container

Tips

  1. If the banana chips become soft after some time for whatever reasons, then just take them in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for a minute or more if required. They will become crisp again.
  2. If you are concerned with calories and oil, you can also make banana chips in oven, but it may take 2-3 hrs. Frying in oil is the easiest way.
  3. Mix the spices right away after removing from oil.
  4. You may fry the chips in any oil, coconut oil gives them the authentic taste.
